The horror thriller series Sweet Home returned to Netflix for a second season and I just had to watch it! I must admit, I was on the edge of my seat for the whole thing. For people who need a refresher, Sweet Home is about a bunch of apartment residents who get turned into vicious monsters during a mysterious outbreak in Seoul. The first season focused on a small group of survivors as they tried to make it out alive.
Season 2 picks up right where we left off. Our main hero Cha Hyun-Su gets captured by the military along with the parasite Sang-Wook.
Cha Hyun-Su in Trouble
We open season 2 with Cha Hyun-Su (played by the terrific Song Kang) in the clutches of the military. But we soon learn the soldier driving the vehicle is actually the body-snatching monster, Sang Wook/Jung Ui-myeong (creepy Lee Jin-Wook). As you can imagine, things spiral quickly.
After a tussle in the car and a frantic escape from the chasing military, Hyun-Su decides to play along, hoping Sang Wook will lead him to answers. However, Dr. Lim has no interest in a vaccine. His tests on the infectees are brutal and meaningless.
Meanwhile, the military causes disaster trying to kill a single monster, showing their incompetence. Our few survivors band together, desperate for answers about their lost friends. But tragedy continues...
Heartbreaking Losses
In episode 3, there are devastating turns. Yi-Kyung finds her transformed fiance and her pregnancy advances rapidly. Sang Wook regains his powers, defeating Hyun-Su, deeming him too human.
But the biggest blow comes when the military bombs the stadium, killing countless civilians including brave Ji-Su. Only Eun-Yoo, Kim Young-Su, Jin-Ok, and Seung-Wan remain. I'm not ashamed to admit I shed some tears.
The loss of beloved characters like Ji-Su so senselessly was just heartbreaking. But their sacrifices clearly propel and motivate the survivors forward.
Time Jump and New Faces
Episode 4 leaps us ahead to Day 337 of the outbreak. The few remaining stadium survivors shelter underground, under military oversight. We follow Eun-Yoo now as the lead protagonist. Her drive to find her lost brother brings new dangers but also hope.
The focus widens to showcase more of the average soldiers on the ground. This lets us see the horror unfold from varied perspectives. Some new characters do feel somewhat unrealistic given the grim context. However, most fresh additions enrich the tense story overall.

Building to a Finale
Since this is essentially a bridge season, big reveals are sparse...for now. By the finale, Yi-Kyung is gone, her rápido-growing hybrid daughter bent on infecting humans. Hyun-Su emerges with a violent split persona. And Eun-Hyeok returns from his monstrous chrysalis, eyes glowing an ominous blue.
So new mysteries surface just as old ones dissolve. It's clear the pieces are being set for an explosive final season. Sweet Home took its time unpacking the trauma and changes in its core cast. Now I'm eagerly awaiting their dangerous paths converging once more!
Stick the Landing, Please!
As much as I enjoyed this season, I did feel a slight disconnect without our original crew together. Their dynamics and bonds initially hooked me. I care about the new faces but I hope season 3 brings back more of that special chemistry.
I also strongly believe the next season should be Sweet Home's last. This story functions best in its gritty, intimate setting before blooming into an unmanageable scale. I'd rather see a satisfying conclusion than an exhausting eternal crawl to the finish line cough The Walking Dead cough.
