My Demon Kdrama - Unspoiled Review

Updated: Dec 22, 2023

Hey there K-drama fans! Have you started watching the latest buzzworthy series that's got everyone talking? My Demon premiered on November 24th and I'm totally hooked on this fantasy romance.

The plot follows a successful businesswoman named Do Do-hee who accidentally messes with an ancient demon named Jeong Gu-won. After a failed blind date and some miscommunication, Do Do-hee ends up with Gu-won's demonic seal and powers, while he's left powerless in the human world. And you know what that means - cue the bickering romance!

my demon korean drama

I gotta say, the premise pulled me right in. I mean, a fierce heroine who takes no crap paired up with a snarky demon? Sign me up!

Impressive Beginning

The opening scene eases us into the demonic world and lore before ramping up the action. One minute Do Do-hee's wandering through a misty forest practically serenading us about her melancholy life, and the next - BAM - she's face-to-face with a dark figure and we're questioning if he's an angel or demon! It's atmospheric and mysterious and had me on the edge of my seat immediately wondering - what's gonna happen next??

Soon we get a glimpse into bad boy Gu-won's past and see that suave confidence as he declares: "I'm incredible, as usual." I don't know about you but anti-hero types like this always draw me in!

Dynamic Characters

Both leads ooze charisma from the start. Do Do-hee rules the boardroom with her sharp business savvy, but also shows an unexpected clumsy side. Meanwhile, ancient demon Gu-won certainly likes to flaunt his power judging by that superior smirk. Already we can see the interesting contrasts between them, which always makes for some scrumptious bickering!

And you can't forget the side characters either - they're full of lively chaos! Whether it's Do Do-hee's devoted secretary or Gu-won's demonic manager L, the supporting cast brings humor and warmth. But they also give us more insight into who the leads are behind their prickly masks.

Visual Eye Candy

Guys...the cinematography. I'm blown away by how gorgeous this drama looks. We get misty forests, rain-slicked streets, and expansive mansions - all oozing with the atmosphere. Not to mention some very aesthetically pleasing demons, ahem!

But it's not just beautiful scenery, there are meaningful visual details too. Like how Do Do-hee is filmed in bright, airy settings contrasting Gu-won's shadowy lair filled with ominous ticking clocks.

And don't even get me started on the lavish costumes! Do Do-hee's chic power suits exude boss lady energy. Meanwhile, Gu-won looks sinfully good whether he's suited up or dressed casually. Whoever's the stylist for this production better be raking in major Won!

Signature K-Drama Tropes

Naturally, My Demon delivers some quintessential tropes that we know and love. I cackled when uptight Do Do-hee gets forced by her family into a string of awful blind dates that set this whole chaotic story in motion. It's a tried and true setup!

Of course, fate intervenes and one Mr. Tall, Dark, and Handsome accidentally finds himself face-to-face with our prickly heiress instead. And being the unflappable demon he is, Gu-won naturally assumes Do Do-hee is an angel and that the Almighty set them up. cue laughter Oh you wacky assumptions!

While tired, the forced dating and identity mix-up tropes are given fresh flavor here. I mean, how often do you get a literal demon-human romance? The writer doesn't stick strictly to formulas either considering Do Do-hee retains her forceful personality after meeting Gu-won rather than instantly falling for him. Our girl has standards!

Early Verdict? Must Watch!

Just one episode in and I'm all aboard the My Demon hype train! There's intriguing worldbuilding, captivating leads, and filmmaking that's on point. You can tell no expense was spared to make this look slick and cinematic.

I especially love that while Do Do-hee fits the stereotype of a rich, demanding heiress on the surface, she also subverts expectations by prioritizing her career over relationships. And I'm super curious to see more of Gu-won's backstory as a member of the demonic bureaucracy.

Most importantly, our leads show off-the-charts chemistry! One minute they're squabbling, the next softly gazing into each other's eyes. Get ready for all the feels because this pairing aims to slay!

So if you're searching for your next K-drama addiction filled with laughter, action, and simmering romantic tension, My Demon promises to deliver in spades. New episodes air every Friday and Saturday on SBS and Netflix. Catch it now because this devilish series is poised to make fans frenzy worldwide!
